Default 472 cad in raceboat

HI and im new to this forum and i like what i see ,so i have a 1968 ,472 cadillac motor that i used in a raceboat this summer and did very good for the summer racing, the motor is completly stock except for new value springs .what i want to do is build the motor up to as close as possible to 399 hp without going over the 399 max hp limit. The motor has to be dynoed in order to verify the hp. do u think that i need new heads or can i have port work done on the stock heads, along with new intake manifold ,new cam ,and shaft rockers ,The motor rpm was 4300,but am looking to turn it 4600 to 4800 rpm with the new mods to the motor.so i would like to have some oponions on what should be done to get the 399 hp .U can check out the racing at www.nsbra.ca.

I think 400 hp with stock heads is doable
Can you build for more HP and use a rev limiter so the engine can't rev past that point?
If so that's the way I would go. Do a good multi valve job on the heads, #15 camshaft with related parts and an intake change.
If the low end is good just leave it alone
There would be more specifics but along with a good ignition this would get you there

OK ,i see that the stock 472 is rated at 375 hp at 4400 rpm but actual hp is not that much ,What is the stock 1968 472 hp.Im woundering if the bottom end ,(CRANK ,RODS AND PISTONS)will handle the hp increase.I have read that the 472 has a very strong crank but what about the stock rods and pistons, the oil pressure is about 35 lbs.so im not planning to replace the bearings or rings .

Rodd are cast and the pistons may have issues IF poor fuel has been used. Would still replace with cast pistons (if needed) and forged rods are now availabe for ubder $300
The stock engine actually made about 300HP.

If I recall correctly... Prior to 1972, HP numbers were taken at the flywheel without accessories, etc, or Gross HP.
After '72 the numbers were taken at the rear wheels, or Net HP.

were always taken at the flywheel. The later engines had all accessories installed and tuned to pass emisions

Eary had no accessories and the engineers must have had their head in the clouds

so ,what is the actual hp of a stock 1968 ,472,with an alternator ,i need to know the hp so i can upgrade to motor as close to 399hp as we can without going over the 399 limit ,and the rules state ,no rev limiters .the motor has to be dynoed before racing so i dont want to go over the 399.hp ,if i knew the correct stok hp i can figure out what is needed for the upgrade .
