I think 440 pistons are about the right height...

I think 440 pistons are about the right height for a 472, but the pin is about .090" larger, the small hole in the rod will have to be bored, not just honed. You need to be sure that there's enough...

7" rods, 403 pistons and a 500 crank will go together and you'll have to deck the block for decent quench, 30-50 thousandths, I think.

It refers to the shape of the dish in the piston, it kind of looks like the outline of a peanut shell. '68-'70 472 had them.

If you buy new pistons, the Keith Black hypereutectics are only a little more expensive than cast stock replacements, if those are even still available for that year.
